Vedic astrology is unusually specific about timing, which makes it useful when you are thinking about preparation and what deserves your attention now.
The Vimshottari Dasha system divides a life into planetary periods, each lasting years, subdivided into shorter sub-periods. You are always inside a nested set of them. The character of a period tends to describe what kind of effort the next few years reward.
In Jyotish, a Mercury sub-period is associated with negotiation, writing, teaching, trading — anything that runs on communication and quick iteration. A Jupiter period tends to expand scope: bigger institutions, mentors, teaching roles, moves abroad. A Saturn period rewards consolidation over launch.
None of this decides for you. What it does is answer a narrower question: is this a year to expand or a year to build quietly? Founders and freelancers find this the most immediately practical part of a reading, because those two strategies fail badly when run at the wrong time.

How is your Dasha sequence worked out?
Vimshottari gives each of the nine grahas a fixed place in the order and a fixed length, adding up to 120 years. Where your sequence begins depends on the nakshatra the Moon occupied at birth, so two people born a few days apart can be in entirely different chapters. Each major period, the Mahadasha, divides into sub-periods called Antardashas, and those are usually what make the timing specific enough to plan around.
